Dozens of chicken products have been pulled from supermarket shelves amid salmonella fears.

Tesco and Sainsbury's are among the chains affected by the outbreak of the food poisoning bacteria at a major chicken processing factory. Aldi, Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and Pret a Manger, have also scrapped a range of ready-to-eat foods including sandwiches, wraps and salads.

The recall came after salmonella was discovered in 'a limited number' of cooked chicken products, according to the supplier, Cranswick. The recall is for products made in the company's Hull factory, but are sold as ingredients for sandwiches, deli products and meals to retailers and food to go outlets throughout the UK.

A statement from the company said: "As a precautionary measure, we have asked our customers to remove any of their products containing our ready-to-eat chicken produced during the affected period. We are working closely with the Food Standards Agency and will collaborate with their experts to resolve the matter."

The worst affected supermarket is Sainsbury's, which has pulled more than 30 chicken products from stores, followed by Tesco, which has removed 13 products. Sainsbury's said the recall, which includes a chicken and bacon sub roll and BBQ wings, is a "precautionary measure". They said: "We are asking customers not to consume the product and to return it to their nearest Sainsbury’s store, where they will receive a full refund.”

Tesco, M&S and Waitrose have also urged customers to return products containing cooked chicken, and the Food Standards Agency has issued an urgent recall notice for two Aldi products. Shoppers have been warned not to eat the products, which all have a Use By date of between May 3 and May 20, and can return them to the store for a full refund.

Salmonella causes diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and a fever, and can lead to hospitalisation in severe cases, although it not yet clear whether anyone has been ill after eating the contaminated food.
