Potatoes have got to be one of the most deliciously versatile ingredients in our pantry. Showing up on our plates time and again in the form of mashed potatoes, French fries, potato chips, potatoes au gratin, and so many more dishes, these starchy tubers are a win all around: they're affordable, long-lasting (as long as you don't store them in the fridge), and they're loaded with nutrients, according to Health.

One of the tastiest potato dishes out there — and one most of us have loved since we were little kids — is hash browns. Also known as hash-browned potatoes, hash browns are a simple mix of seasoned, grated potatoes, sometimes mixed with onions, that are fried until crispy in a hot skillet. A classic breakfast accompaniment to eggs, bacon, and sausages, hash browns are delectable when made at home, but the frozen versions available in supermarkets are a convenient option when you lack the time or desire to hand-grate potatoes. 

If you've bought any frozen hash browns lately, you should be aware that a particular brand of hash brown patties was recently recalled by the manufacturer.

If you've recently purchased frozen hash brown patties made by Cavendish Farms, and you're allergic or sensitive to wheat, you should be aware that, as announced last week by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), the New Brunswick, Canada-based manufacturer is recalling 441 cases of its 43.2-ounce packages of Original Hash Brown Patties because they may contain undeclared wheat. For those with a gluten allergy or intolerance, the recalled hash browns could provoke a reaction, the announcement said.

The recalled hash browns were sold in nine eastern states — Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island — in the freezer cases of supermarkets including ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, and Fairway Market. All stores have removed the recalled hash browns.

The affected hash browns have a UPC code of 0 56210 34217 1 and a "best before date" of "2024 FE 01." Customers can return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
