NEW WATERFORD — Horst Sub & Deli owner Wynne Horst said the business he and his father Leon started in 2008 is best known for the freshness and the quality of the sub sandwiches served on bread baked daily.

But there’s a lot more being offered than most people realize and the loyal regular customers who walk through those doors at 5437 state Route 7, New Waterford know the gem that is Horst Sub & Deli.

“A lot of the customers I’ve known the past 14 years. They treat us well. On weekends, we get a lot of people coming from Akron or Pittsburgh,” Horst said.

There’s a lot of local customers, with a lunch time business coming from other local businesses in the area, landscapers, contractors, even people just passing through on their way to the sale in Rogers, Beaver Creek State Park or taking a road trip.

“People who have never been here before, we surprise them with what we have,” he said.

The business remodeled and added on in 2013, expanding the sandwiches, installing a bigger deli, adding drinks, more cooler space and more snacks. In 2015, the business started carrying Hogan’s Bakery items, offering an assortment of baked goods such as donuts and cakes, all delivered daily.

“We’re always trying new products,” Horst said.

There are 14 plus different cold or toasted subs on the menu. The philly cheese steak is popular and a turkey, bacon and smoked gouda cheese on a pretzel bun started as a special, but is now part of the regular menu. There’s also BBQ roast beef and bacon with smoked gouda cheese as a special. A featured special is run daily. Lunch can be ordered and picked up or there’s room to dine in or eat outside.

For breakfast, the choices include donuts and cinnamon rolls, fresh brewed coffee and breakfast sandwiches that are available until 11 a.m..

Horst Sub & Deli also sells lots of pizza by the slice or as a whole pizza for take out with many options, including a chicken bacon ranch, Hawaiian, veggie, meat lovers, deluxe, the works, spicy hot or build your own. There are eight different varieties. There’s also the Take & Bake pizza option, kept frozen for customers to take home and bake.

There are 10 flavors of hand dipped ice cream, along with soft serve, 15 different flavors of milkshakes, root beer floats, sundaes, waffle cones, and cones or dishes. Ice cream can be purchased to go in pints and quarts.

Meat and cheese for the sandwiches is sliced fresh daily from the deli and the bread is baked fresh daily. The lettuce is locally grown hydroponic. For the sandwiches, a gluten-free bun is also an option.

The deli includes 20 different cheeses, 10 different lunch meats, cheese spreads, potato salad, macaroni salad, chicken salad, pasta salad and ham salad. In the winter time from September through March, at least three soups are offered daily and there’s a soup of the day. Some of the choices include potato and bacon, chili, chicken and dumplings, broccoli and cheese, wedding soup and stuffed green pepper soup.

For drinks, Horst Sub & Deli offers Marlowe’s Coffee from Canfield, with different blends and flavors and a 1-pound pack ready to brew. Baker’s Golden Dairy products, including flavored milks, can be found in the cooler along with a variety of sodas, craft sodas, teas and lemonade. Horst said Joe Tea is very popular and flavorful.

Other snack items featured include Herr’s and Utz chips, Carolina Kettle chips, candy, nuts, dried fruit mixes, Byler’s Relish House condiments and lots of chocolate items.

“Come and check it all out,” Horst said.

Hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday, closed Sunday. There are 14 employee, with four full-time and the rest part-time.
