With ongoing cost of living pressures, more Aussies are finding themselves switching to frozen food options to get by.

But while choosing frozen over fresh can save you a bit of money when you get to the checkout, some of the fresh food options still work out better for your hip pocket.

Today's Your Money expert Effie Zahos headed down to her own local supermarket to put it to the test and see which came out on top.

When she looked at fruit like blueberries, frozen did end up being the better value option.

"It was cheaper by up to $16 per kilogram," she told Today.

But when she looked at strawberries, the fresh pick was better than frozen.

"When you look at it again by unit price, this was $8 per kilo versus $11.60 per kilo," she said.

Effie has mentioned this to viewers before, but the key takeaway to learn from is to shop by unit price.

When looking at vegetables like carrots, Effie said fresh was better with shoppers paying almost double per unit for the frozen variety.

She said this was likely because you are also paying for the convenience of the frozen variety being peeled and cut also.

With cauliflower, fresh was also cheaper even when you consider the stem is included in the weight price.

But with something like frozen chopped onions, you are again paying more for the convenience of avoiding tears when cutting them fresh.

"It pays to think what is in season. Have a look around, look at the unit price because that makes the job so much easier," Effie said.

For other foods, frozen typically came out on top.

"Salmon I found was definitely cheaper frozen," she said.

"You have Norwegian versus Tasmanian salmon, $7 per kilogram."

With something like pizza, Effie said there is a lot of competition out there, especially with takeaway restaurants like Dominos or Pizza Hut.

She compared a fresh, store-bought FQ Kitchen option with a frozen McCain one and there was less than a dollar difference between the two.

This is why taste was still important to take into consideration.

"I tasted the fresh one last night. It was beautiful, so tonight I'm going try the frozen one," she said.
